RECORD-BREAKING WEEKEND FOR FOOD AND TEQUILA
3 May 2004 (Lake Tahoe, NV): Sammy Hagar opened up his first stateside Cabo Wabo Cantina in Harveys Resort Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada this past weekend. The Cantina 0fficially opened for business on Friday morning, April 30, 2004.
The 6,000 square foot Cantina restaurant served 3,700 covers over the three-day period, a record amount for a room seating 165 capacity restaurant. A total of 700 cases of Cabo Wabo Tequila were consumed throughout the two properties of Harveys (which houses the Cabo Wabo Cantina restaurant) and Harrah¹s (home to the Cabo Nightclub).
Hagar stated, "Cabo Wabo is a lifestyle fits Tahoe to a T. To be able to swim at the beach, mountain bike, hike, summer and winter ski, snowboard Stake a siesta and rest up for a nightlife that goes all night in the casinos and the various clubs around town. Are you kidding me?"
"I've now got Cabo Wabo Cantinas in two of the most beautiful places on earth Cabo San Lucas (in Mexico) and now here in Lake Tahoe."
Sammy and his band The Waboritas performed three sold-out performances Friday the 3th through Sunday, May 2nd. Country superstar Toby Keith, guitarist/vocalist Ted Nugent, the Dead's Bob Weir, Jerry (Alice in Chains) Cantrell, Billy (The Cult) Duffy, Ronnie Montrose and guitarist Johnny Hiland performed throughout the weekend with Hagar.
Guest performance highlights with Sammy and the Waboritas included Toby Keith with "I Love This Bar", Ted Nugent, "Cat Scratch Fever", and "Route 66", Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy with "Man in the Box" and "Whole Lotta Zep" (a montage of Led Zepplin songs) and Ronnie Montrose, "Rock Candy."
Sunday's show began with a sit-down acoustic set. Joining Sammy were the Waboritas bassist Mona, percussionist David Lauser and guitarist Vic Johnson along Johnny Hiland. Toby Keith performed "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Can't You See." Bob Weir came out and joined for "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and "The Weight". Jerry Cantrell performed "No Excuses" and "Finish What You Started."
The weekend got off to an early start with Ted Nugent performing with The Waboritas for a sold-out show on Thursday (April 30th) evening.
The Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is now in its 14th year as the most successful restaurant and nightclub in Cabo. Cabo Wabo Tequila is the#2 premium tequila in the United States. The Cabo Wabo Cantina in Harveys Resort Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, turning over into an intimate nightclub at 10PM each evening.
In addition, the South Shore Room housed in Harrah's will become the "Tahoe Wabo" performance venue when rock'n roll shows are booked. The first Tahoe Wabo show will be this Wednesday evening, May 5 with the Cardboard Vampyres featuring Jerry Cantrell and Billy Duffy along with Cult bassist Chris Wyse and vocalist John (Motley Crue) Corabi.
Hagar summed up the weekend in the simplest of terms with the most heartfelt of meanings. Looking out over the sold-out crowd on Sunday night, he put hand to his heart, shook his head and stated, "It doesn't get any better than this."
